Certification

For a school to become Fairtrade certificated, it needs to show evidence of certain criteria having been fulfilled. These are;

  1. Fairtrade lessons to incorporated explicitly into at least two year groups’ schemes of work
  2. Participation in Fairtrade fortnight, including at least one assembly on Fairtrade to each year group
  3. Promotion of Fairtrade within the local community
  4. Promotion of Fairtrade goods within the school (e.g. at parents’ evenings, within the staffroom)

For the certificate to be awarded, the school’s governing body need to have passed a motion at a governors’ meeting committing the school to the scheme. A nominated teacher needs to be identified who will act as contact/liaison person for the school. Both of these need to be done by December of the year preceding certification.

In March, coinciding with Fairtrade fortnight, SGFTN will organise an activity which will enhance schools’ involvement in Fairtrade.

By June, a school wishing to be certificated for the following year will present its portfolio of evidence through its nominated teacher. The award will be presented at the start of the subsequent school year, i.e. in September.
