James Musiele is a coffee grower in Uganda. He tries to provide for his family but he often cannot make ends meet from his crop sales. The world market price of coffee fluctuates wildly and is often driven down by heavily subsidised 'northern' production. James never knows from one month to the next what price his crop will fetch and often cannot afford to invest properly in his farm. The result of his low income is:

  • Cannot afford to send his children to school.
  • Children need to start work early in life to help support the family.
  • Cannot afford medical care for his family.
  • No way to rebuild his business - no access to loans, marketing or business help.
